RELTEC Selects Broadcom's VDSL Silicon for Its DISC*S Broadband Access Equipment
July 14, 1998
IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via NewsEdge Corporation -- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM) today announced RELTEC Corporation's (NYSE: RLT) selection of the Broadcom(R) BCM6010 Scalable DSL Transceiver to deliver Advanced Copper Solutions(TM) over RELTEC's industry-leading DISC*S(R) multimedia broadband access platform. The BCM6010 is the world's first single-chip solution that supports both Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) and Very High-speed Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL) technology. This enables RELTEC to cost-effectively deliver a wide range of new digital services across their access platforms to residential customers over existing copper-based telephone lines.
The BCM6010 allows RELTEC Access Systems to build a single-platform system capable of supporting all DSL data rates. Broadcom offers the only rate-adaptable, single-chip solution that can support Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL), ADSL and VDSL data rates. In Fiber-to-the-Curb (FTTC) applications, the BCM6010 supports VDSL data rates up to 52 Megabits per second (Mbps), and in Fiber-to-the-Node (FTTN) applications it supports VDSL data rates up to 26 Mbps. In addition, the BCM6010's flexibility allows it to support both ADSL Lite and full-rate ADSL. When configured for ADSL Lite, the BCM6010 supports splitterless operation. (This enables the modem to operate using existing in-home wiring, eliminating the need to install costly POTS band-splitting filters. With full-rate ADSL, these filters are required to separate the voice and data traffic.) The BCM6010 is currently available and shipping in volume.
"The DISC*S(R) platform choice of the BCM6010 is an important milestone, " said Henry Nicholas, Broadcom's President and CEO. "This demonstrates Broadcom's leadership as a supplier of VDSL silicon. This decision, coupled with other recently announced BCM6010 VDSL programs, makes it clear that VDSL technology is seen by key suppliers of broadband access equipment as the optimum solution for delivering services such as digital TV, voice and high-speed Internet access to customers over phone lines. RELTEC's skills in access systems integration and network components will allow the development of a robust solution using Broadcom's advanced silicon technology. "
"With the BCM6010, we have further extended the capabilities of our highly flexible DISC*S access platform, supporting multiple network topologies," said Mike Pratt, Vice President, General Manager of RELTEC Access Systems. "The Broadcom chip supports symmetric and asymmetric DSL data rates at speeds of up to 52 Mbps and can be reconfigured to support Fiber-to-the-Node (FTTN), Fiber-to-the-Curb (FTTC) and conventional central office network configurations. With its low power consumption (less than 1 Watt) and high performance, the BCM6010 enables us to deliver equipment which supports digital voice, video and data services for movie-quality videos, CD-quality sound, pay-per-view movies, on-screen integration of popular telephone features, and high-speed Internet access."
RELTEC's DISC*S platform can be installed at the neighborhood node or in the central office, and supports up to 16 quad VDSL line cards for a total of 64 VDSL customers (circuits) per shelf. Each circuit supports downstream data rates of 26 Mbps and upstream data rates of 3.2 Mbps. For FTTC installations, downstream data rates of up to 52 Mbps will be available.
