A few points why satellite operators like Iridium may fail.

Numbers quoted from the Economist as I remember them.

1. The latest offering in hand phones is a 500g ( 1 lb)
brick, costing around US$3000. Who wants to carry this beast
around ?

2. Charges are expected to be around US$7 / min when using
the satellite connection. A bit stiff ?

3. Satellites are transmitting in the microwave band this means
that phones can not be used inside buildings, in valleys
where mountains block the satellite or in cities where
buildings block the line of site to the satellite. Microwave
is line of site only. Where do you use it ?
