I think that most of us would have a Buddha nature if it wasn't squashed by indoctrination from the time we are born.

Del, your Buddha nature is still there. Maybe it has been squashed and ignored for a long time, but it's still possible to find it and bring it back to life. From reading your posts, I think your Buddha nature is in pretty good shape.

Who are those with the shaven heads and red robes that I see?

Sure, some people behave like followers, and some like leaders, but that's regardless of religious belief. By my reference to sheep-like followers I meant that in the Bible there is the "Lord is my shepherd" type of quote, which I've always interpreted as meaning you should blindly follow the Lord without thinking. Buddhist teachings have encouraged me to think for myself (not that I really needed any encouragement to do so). The Buddha taught people to treat his teachings like a goldsmith would treat some metal being sold to him. Instead of taking the seller's word that the metal is gold, the smith would assay it to determine if it really is gold. In the same way, we need to evaluate any teaching to determine if it is really true before we accept it for ourselves.
