If you try to turn everything into a Pro-Intel argument you're just going to end up as another run of the mill Intelabee. <G>
The low end computer being profitable for Compaq is a direct function of lower component costs due to currency fuxuations of some Asian currencies vs the dollar. Also, to a lesser extent, some Asian companies are willing to sell cheap right now. Not to mention K6s they probably only pay $70 for. Dell benefits from this as well...but not quite as much because they buy their motherboards from Intel...
I don't know how long you've been following these threads but one of arguments Paul E. and others have been crowing about is that there is no profit in Sub $1000...and I might add, you would expect margins to be less...but now, the currency fluxuation has added a new twist to the equation.
I don't know how MSFT go thrown into the fray. You must own it.
