The above, not only applies to spouses, but to people who influence us a great deal, one way or another.
The greatest reward, IMO is when one comes to the realization above, and then an overwhelming feeling of freedom fills you with joy and happiness, and all of a sudden you are certain to overcome any obstacle in front of you, once the undue influence is discarded.
