Hi all from Moscone Center. The "hush-hush" meeting referred to is an open secret out here. The points outlined in that message are well taken, but revolt or not, the march will have to continue. The same
factors that apply to the equipment makers also apply to the fabricators. There WILL be consolidation, if not because of the high costs of 300mm development, then because of the lack of business. There have been numerous sightings of small to medium sized company execs huddled in serious discussion with the big boys in hopes of partnering or outright takeover. The mood is grim on most fronts. A
lot of people were surprised by the recent reports from UMC and TSMC about utilization factors. Some smaller companies are in a real panic. Nobody expects the picture to improve before mid year 99. Be ready, earnings are going to SUCK for the next 2 quarters across the board. I was not able to find a single company that is looking for service or engineering talent in significant numbers. Since the lead time to train a service guy to basic competency is 6-12 months, that means sales aren't expected to recover for a similar period.

I hope to have an ear in the Sematech meeting, will report what I find out.
