Actually the "software" can be kept locally on the PC as a driver
that is loaded for the modem. I bought
2 months ago the US Robotics Sportster Winmodem for a total of
$75 dollars, free upgrade to 56k included. Where did you get your
numbers? I also got the Sportster (high end model) with the
rom upgrade. Costs $10 to upgrade. Pick a protocol. Upgrade
is not a problem.

Not much more to say. USRobotics has a software upgradable modem,
that has free upgrades for $75!
