From THE STREET, Ascend Communications (ASND:Nasdaq) reportedly rose to 50 3/8 from a close of 49 9/16 in after-hours trading after beating second-quarter earnings estimates. The company reported earnings of 29 cents per share, a penny above the 24-analyst forecast but below the year-ago 31 cents. Ascend executives said they are comfortable with earnings estimates for the rest of the year and 1999. A 23-analyst consensus calls for third-quarter earnings of 31 cents, versus the year-ago 20 cents, and fourth-quarter earnings of 34 cents, versus the year-ago 24 cents. A 25-analyst consensus calls for 1998 earnings of $1.19 and 1999 earnings of $1.53. The company's CEO said that, despite market rumors, Ascend has not had any talks to acquire Advanced Fibre Communications (AFCI:Nasdaq). Advanced Fibre reported second-quarter earnings of 9 cents per share -- beating the 11-analyst forecast of 8 cents but trailing behind the year-ago 11 cents.
