Found this in Forbes - interesting day - humor never hurts

6 A.M.You are jolted awake when an 8-bit Motorola MC68HC05 chip tunes in NPR on your Bose Wave radio. In the kitchen, meanwhile, a 4-bit Seiko Epson microcontroller turns on your Braun programmable coffeemaker and begins brewing your favorite French vanilla gourmet blend. Oui!
6:05 A.M.You groom the face only a mother could love with a Braun electric shaver, powered by an 8-bit SGS Thomson microcontroller.

6:35 A.M.A 4-bit Toshiba TMP47C activates the compressor in your Sub-Zero refrigerator as you pull out cream for your coffee. You put a slice of Wonder bread in your Sunbeam toaster, activating an Orbit custom ASIC, which processes temperature sensor input and monitors voltage.

7 A.M.You glance at your cheap-but-not-so-chic Timex Indiglo night-light digital wristwatch powered by an 8-bit Motorola MC68HC05. You rush for the door, pausing to punch your secret code onto the keypad of the Sentrol residential security system, and an 8-bit Motorola MC68HC11 microcontroller disarms the burglar alarm.

7:15 A.M.Downtown, a traffic nightmare! A Philips 8-bit microcontroller turns a traffic light red according to a preset schedule, while up to 12 chips control your Jeep Grand Cherokee as you impatiently idle at the intersection. Not one to waste a minute, you pull out your Compaq PC Companion to preview the day's appointments. A Philips TwoChipHCG (which contains a 32-bit Mips RISC processor) retrieves and displays your schedule.

7:30 A.M.At your office high-rise, you step into an Otis elevator. As you scan the morning papers (The Journal, plus The Daily News), the ride to your floor is made smoother by up to nine Intel microprocessors, ranging from an 8-bit 80C31 to a 32-bit 80386.

7:32 A.M.You reach your office and swipe your Schlumberger Smart Card, with its 8-bit Motorola MC68HC05 microcontroller, along the sensor to unlock the door.

7:33 A.M.You switch on the lights and settle in at your desk. Overhead, an 8-bit Philips microcontroller regulates the energy efficiency of the fluorescent lights. Though you barely notice, the office feels pleasantly cool, thanks to an 8-bit Hitachi H8/300 microcontroller in the GE air-conditioning system.

7:35 A.M.You turn on your computer, put your feet up and pick up the latest issue of Town & Country, turning immediately to the horoscope page. Meanwhile, a 32-bit Motorola PowerPC microprocessor drives your Power Macintosh. At the same time, an 8-bit Motorola MC68HC05 displays the desktop on your Sony monitor, and a 16-bit MC68HC16 powers the Iomega removable Jaz hard drive.

8:10 A.M.The telephone rings, and you carefully eye the Caller-ID screen. An 8-bit Hitachi H8/300L displays the caller's number. (It's your broker!) You ignore the rings (you haven't finished reading your horoscope), and the call is forwarded to your Nortel message server, where a Pentium processor powers all voice mail systems.

8:15 A.M.After finishing T&C (it's a good day to invest!), you check your email. An 8-bit Philips 80C51 TPM chip controls the IBM TrackPoint you use to pull up the program. As you wait for your messages to appear, a Texas Instruments TMS320C5x operates the 3Com modem, while a 64-bit NEC VR5000 microprocessor manages the switch fabric in the company's Cisco router.

12 P.M.The clock strikes noon, but it's too cold to hit the links. You head for the downtown gym instead. As you pound the virtual pavement on a NordicTrack PowerTread 6.0, a Zilog Z86C90 controls the machine's speed and timer.

12:40 P.M.In the parking lot, you answer your Ericsson digital mobile phone, powered by a Texas Instruments TMS320C54x DSP. It's your broker! You put in a sell order on Rambus because you don't like Sylvester Stallone, not realizing that you've confused a bad movie with one of the hottest high tech companies trading today.

12:50 P.M.You stop at the bank to mull over your dwindling account balance, displayed by an Intel Pentium processor on the NCR Personas automated teller machine.

2:10 P.M.Back at the office, your Veronica Lake look-alike secretary, Veronica, presents the gift you will bring to your nephew's birthday party. You are pleased to see it's the Microsoft ActiMates Interactive Barney, an educational doll given the gift of speech and movement by Microchip Technology's PIC16CR65 8-bit RISC microcontroller.

3:20 P.M.You finish a memo ("Short Apple at $25") and your Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 4000 begins to print 17 pages per minute, enabled by NEC's 64-bit VR4300 chip. You hand the finished product to Veronica, who makes 50 copies with a Xerox next-generation copier, powered by Motorola's 32-bit PowerPC 603e.

4:23 P.M.You receive a faxed invitation from a contact at Merrill Lynch for a weekend golf game at Wingfoot Country Club. What luck! Your Brother laser fax machine uses a 16-bit chip to print the page.

6 P.M.On your way home, you stop for gas (full serve) and a Kit Kat bar, where Philips 8-bit microcontrollers power both the digital display gasoline pump and the vending machine.

6:15 P.M.The streetlights illuminate your drive as they turn on in unison according to a preset schedule executed by a Philips 8-bit microcontroller.

6:25 P.M.You stop by the supermarket to pick up a few essentials. The checkout clerk slides each item over the Spectra-Physics bar code scanner, and a Motorola 68331 inputs the price. The total is calculated and displayed on the NCR cash register by an Intel 486. You swipe your American Express Platinum Card through the Radiant Systems point-of-sale kiosk, and an NEC 64-bit VR4310 chip computes the transaction. The sale goes through!

8 P.M.As you pull into your driveway, the sprinkler system on the front lawn turns off on a schedule controlled by a 4-bit NEC 75XL.

8:15 P.M.Back home, you activate a 24-bit Motorola DSP56004 when you turn on the All-Sinatra-All-the-Time radio station on your Onkyo sound system, with Dolby digital surround sound. You place your Healthy Choice entr‚e in your GE SpacemakerPlus microwave, and an 8-bit Intel 8051 controls the timer and power settings.

8:45 P.M.After dinner, you put your fork in your Maytag IntelliSense dishwasher, where an 8-bit Motorola MC68HC05 uses fuzzy logic to constantly adjust the wash cycle according to water purity levels. You throw your damask napkin into your Maytag Neptune washing machine, and an 8-bit Toshiba TMP87 runs cycle instructions while a Xilinx custom ASIC controls the motor. Meantime, your GE SmartWater softener twiddles the ion exchange rate as an 8-bit Intel 8051 reacts to high salt levels in the water.

9 P.M.You turn on the TV and its embedded 8-bit Zilog C80.

10 P.M.You sleep soundly, unaware that Rambus reached new highs after you sold, but knowing that your First Alert carbon monoxide detector will keep you snoring safely with the help of an 8-bit Motorola MC68HC05.
