ExpediaCom Global Inc. Working with GENESIS Travel Distribution System Inc.
Business Wire - July 14, 1998 12:11
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 14, 1998--ExpediaCom Global Inc. (NASDAQ:EXPB) Based on a number of inquiries from various media sources, Robert Wilder, President and CEO, ExpediaCom Global Inc. confirms that the company is working with GENESIS Travel Distribution System Inc. in the creation of a new client server based reservations, ticketing and settlement system for Travel Agents around the globe. The system will connect Travel Agents to an array of travel service suppliers including major airlines, car rental companies, hotel chains and tour operators.

The following are excerpts and quotes from recent press releases from Bruce Bishins, President and CEO of GENESIS Travel Distribution System Inc.:

New York, 02 July 1998: The GENESIS Travel Distribution System took an important step to further the prospects of massive distribution cost reduction and improved, more profitable automated services for travel agents through its Computer Reservations System (CRS), ticketing, and settlement platform. On 30 June 1998, GENESIS executives and the boards of directors of USTAR (United States Travel Agent Registry) and CSTAR (Canadian Standard Travel Agent Registry), met with a wide range of travel suppliers at the Houston Airport Marriott Hotel.

Key among the attendees were distribution and marketing representatives from American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Continental Airlines, America West Airlines, US Airways, Southwest Airlines, Air Canada, British Airways, Olympic Airways, Pakistan International Airlines, and major car rental, hotel, tour and cruise companies.

GENESIS President and CEO Bruce Bishins updated the suppliers on the vast progress which GENESIS had made during the past year and outlined the $50 million price tag the system would cost.

Bishins was quoted, "We've not only accepted the challenge of doing something substantive about reducing the escalating costs of distribution, through the E-Reserve Consortium, we've actually architected and are building a complete scaleable client server turnkey solution for reservations, ticketing and settlement. In 1997 Travel Agents booked $200 Billion of services through electronic systems. We intend the GENESIS system to be the pre-eminent booking system for Travel Agents in the new millennium."

The meeting in Houston was also attended by executives from E-Reserve, the technology consortium made up of Bell Professional Services (a division of Bell Canada), ADP Systems, Quantum Objects, and ExpediaCom Global, which signed an agreement with GENESIS to provide the network and communications infrastructure, software, processing, and system integration components of the platform.

Official representatives from both major US Travel Associations, ASTA and ARTA were also in attendance, including ARTA Chairman Lynn Hayes who addressed the participants and urged their complete support for GENESIS.

GENESIS is a comprehensive alternative to the legacy Computer Reservations System (CRS) environment, and centers around a travel agency initiated, point-of-sale system incorporating reservations, ticketing, and supplier settlement. The Year 2000 compliant GENESIS platform is being implemented and jointly owned by USTAR, CSTAR, ESTAR, and ASTAR and has the full support of ASTA and ARTA.
