Bay Networks Serves Up Stackable Switch

Bay Networks is now offering a stackable workgroup switch that, in combination with its routing switch, targets the midsized enterprises Ethernet switching market.
The new BayStack 450 switch, designed to be used in conjunction with Bay Network's Accelar routing switch, offers built-in Web-based management agents and RMON technology to determine statistic and diagnostic information.
"Putting these two products together allows resellers to add value to their customer's networks because of the aggressive price point," said Mark Weiner, senior manager of channel marketing for Bay Networks.
The BayStack 450 Switches are stackable workgroup 10/100/1000 switches that have a cascade stacking architecture and maintain connectivity if a single switch unit fails. It also has application prioritizing and IP multicast support.
"We are trying to provide enterprise-level performance and functionality at a workgroup price," said Weiner.
The switch will be targeted at medium- to high-density desktop switching enterprises -- up to 150 users per workgroup.
"We avoided functionality constraints that our competitors like 3Com, Cisco, and Intel have," said Gary Thomas, director of product marketing. "It's an architecture that is not constrained at the gate. The switch has the capability to add bandwidth as users move forward with their enterprise.
The BayStack 450 Switch comes in 24-port and 12-port configurations each with a Media Dependent Adapter slot, as well as a cascade stacking module slot. The switches offer uplink options like Gigabit Ethernet and ATM.
The new switch is available now for $3,595, or $149 per port. The BayStack 400-ST1 Cascade Module add-on is due out in November for $495.
