Well if a long term market for the $500 PC is to exist, then integration on a large scale is a necessity... many if not all
electronic functions will have to be accomplished on a single
chip. Just think about it for a minute... your typical PC has
a very limited set of connections to its peripherals... and basically
I/O ports other than power connections. It can be integrated to that degree, basically a single chip for each major function. This would make a compact and more reliable computer than we currently have that could compete in the $500 price range. There are still some big obstacles to overcome (such as reliable analog and digital circuitry
on the same silicon wafer) but progress is still happening rapidly.
And peripherals with a mechanical component such as disk drives, tape drives, etc have a big problem with the integration in the overall scheme of things. Micromachines may provide some solutions here...
The future is a very hard thing to predict based simply on the present.
