IBM Corporation Selects Emulex LightPulse Host Adapter for Fibre Channel Connectivity
COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 15, 1998--Emulex Corp. (Nasdaq:EMLX), a leader in fibre channel products and technology, Wednesday announced that International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) and Emulex have executed an agreement under which IBM will purchase Emulex PCI fibre channel host adapters for the IBM(R) S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server(TM) computing system.
IBM has announced plans to provide its customers with the benefits of balanced system design through advances in network bandwidth, clustering technologies, and new application support. IBM plans to continue to enhance bandwidth by supporting fibre channel, utilizing fibre optic technology, for exponential performance improvements for large data applications.
"IBM continues to define the standard in enterprise computing with its recent announcement of FIbre CONnection channels (FICON)," said Bryan R. Golnek, vice president of licensing, alliances and OEM for the S/390 division.
"FICON with its significantly higher I/O rate and bandwidth will enable our customers to employ the power of our future servers to address evolving and increasingly more complex workloads associated with e-business on a global scale. In choosing Emulex as the technology supplier for the FICON channel, IBM has chosen a supplier that IBM believes can meet the arduous reliability standards that our customers require and one that has demonstrated the technology leadership necessary for meeting today's needs and tomorrow's requirements."
"IBM is the industry leader in enterprise systems, and Emulex is extremely pleased that IBM has selected our high performance LightPulse 7000 host adapters as the IBM fibre channel PCI connectivity solution," said Paul Folino, president and chief executive officer of Emulex. "With IBM fibre channel products available in the market, we expect the demand for fibre channel products to continue to accelerate."
Designed to support mission critical enterprise applications in networked storage, clustering, and high performance network links, the LP7000 and LP7000E family provides the industry's widest set of operating features including support for all fibre channel topologies and classes of service, and both SCSI and LAN protocols.
In addition, the LP7000E provides full backward compatibility with customer software drivers written to Emulex's LP6000 "Service Level Interface" specifications, and supports Emulex's broad family of standard operating system drivers, including Windows NT, Solaris, AIX, NetWare, and UnixWare. The LP 7000E provides an unprecedented 20,000 I/O operations per second from a single PCI host bus adapter. In addition, industry standard benchmark testing has shown performance over 10 kilometer links to be more than double that of competitive products.
"IBM's integration of Emulex fibre channel products should significantly advance the adoption of fibre channel host adapters," said John McArthur, director of storage systems research for International Data Corp. "IBM, with more than $2.3 billion in external multi-user storage revenue, exerts a major influence on the direction of the storage industry and will offer a significant OEM distribution channel for Emulex."
