From a midday Reuters article (WCOM & MCIC are now internet stocks!):

As a group, Internet stocks did not fare well Wednesday morning, with most names in the sector posting declines.

Exceptions were MCI Communications Corp (MCIC - news), which rose 1-3/4 to 66-1/16, and WorldCom Inc (WCOM - news), which gained 1-1/2 to 54-1/4 as investors awaited formal word of a rumored deal to sell MCI's Internet assets to Britain's Cable & Wireless Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: CW.L).

MCI and WorldCom are hoping the deal will prompt European clearance of their merger. Even with the asset sale, the combined MCI-WorldCom would will still be a dominant force in the Internet space through WorldCom's UUNet unit.
