Is the comparison to Egghead valid?

It is. While it is true that PROG specializes in the "developer", differentiations like these must be advantageous to the consumer to be truly meaningful.

A store specialized, say, in car parts can afford to carry a lot more inventory than a general hardware store. However in the catalogue/web commerce model it is possible to have a shop that sells *all* sorts of software. PROG should have realized that and beat Egghead in its own game, instead they stuck to their supposed area of specialization and now their very existence is in doubt.

More importantly in e-commerce horizontal integration has the upper hand. For example, I pool my book and cd orders to amortize the cost of shipping.

Similarly, if I can buy Visual C++ and Accolade's F1 from the same place, I'll do so...
