Here's Herbie: A smattering of items: -- Modem mania: A few weeks ago Mory Ejabat, CEO of Alameda-based Ascend Communications, boasted that in January his company would be the first modem maker ``to actually deliver on the promise'' of a modem that transmits data at 56-kilobits per second. At the time, this column questioned whether Ejabat's timing was realistic. The modem's chip is being developed by Rockwell International, and Rockwell said it wouldn't be able to ship a 56-k chip until later in the spring. Fast-forward to this week: Speaking at the Deutsche Morgan Grenfell conference, Ejabat -- according to a report by DMG's analysts -- said he thought the 56-k modem technology has probably been over-hyped.
