You guys are all missing the boat here. The key is long-term strategy. CPQ may not be showing everything, but when you are #2 - you ARE #2. You don't die quickly and yet everyone is running. I say keep running for the short-term pops in DELL. DELL and CPQ are 2 different companies now. DELL does not have a services division, CPQ does. CPQ will garner its growth just like IBM does. Why? AGAIN it is SERVICES ladies and gentlemen. Do you compare IBM and DELL? No. Why? Easy - either no one thinks much of IBM or they already know IBM is in a different market. Do I think it is smart for CPQ? Yes and no. Services are much more profitable than boxes - any day, any time. If you don't DO service-style companies, get out of CPQ because THAT IS WHY they bought DEC. They may still have inventory problems, but who didn't in their days? #2 will get through this w/o much worry. I think CPQ is setting up a nice run this quarter. Watch and see. Ask anyone who is a large customer of DEC and CPQ. I bet a good portion are actually excited about this merger of services and systems. The profit margins on services are much larger than boxes. GET IT! Ay-yai-yai this is unreal here. You are all focusing on the wrong part of CPQ. CPQ will be in IBM's league with a few twists that say they are not an IBM model.

I use CPQ boxes and DEC services. I don't do it because I am married to them. I still use them because whenever I set up a network and a server - I NEVER NEED TO LOOK BACK. It simply works and doesn't stop working. Ask me how many times my CPQ boxes have locked up under Unix or NT. Go ahead. You shouldn't need to ask and if you do, dump the stock. That's a ballsy statement not many IS Directors can make these days. Also, I don't have a large support staff and yet server & network maintenance /downtime is practically nil. Unless that changes, I will be a CPQ man for a while.

Your thoughts ladies and gentlemen??

Mark
