Compaq says cutting inventories in pipeline

HOUSTON, July 15 (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp. Wednesday said it made ''significant reductions'' in its inventory levels between its factories and the consumer.

''This was achieved largely by focusing the company's sales and marketing efforts on sales out of its commercial distribution channel,'' the company said in a statement.

The company said during the most recent quarter it increased its ''unit sales out'' by 36 percent worldwide.

''The company's regional business units in North America and Europe, Middle East, and Africa each realized significant increases over the same quarter a year ago,'' the statement added..

''We're very pleased with the sales out results in the second quarter as we continue to evolve our business model,'' Enrico Pesatori, senior vice president of the company, said in the statement.

''This shift to a sales out orientation provides the best measurement of Compaq's success in the market,'' he added.

Compaq said it is the second largest computer company in the world and the largest global supplier of personal computers.
