Currently, Microsoft comes out with new OS's that are tied tightly with their applications, and prevent others from tying their apps as close to the OS. Breaking up the company might lead to better products because it would create a level playing field for the application companies. Either the OS company would allow everyone to tie into their OS, or nobody. Either way, the increased competition would benefit consumers.

We are all still in favor of competition, right? Capitalism, not Totalitarianism (either by States or Monopolies).
