Jim, My point is that there is no real competition for Intel...I envision a day at Intel as a day filled with "What if" scenarios and rigorous mental testing.

What do the following companies have in common?
AMD,
NSM/Cyrix
DEC Alpha
IBM/Motorola/Apple PowerPC pact.
Samsung/Mitsubishi/Fujitsu pact
MIPS
SUN
HP

I will tell you: All have (or had) huge amounts of capital, all have great technical expertise and all have tried to compete with Intel. They failed (or appear to be failing). Intel's day is filled with "What if" scenarios and rigorous mental testing. That is why they appear peerless in the MP chip business. Intel, MSFT and the PC clones made IBM look like a brain-dead giant the way they took control of the PC market.

DEC and SGI/MIPS both have very powerful chips for Windows NT. MSFT made it clear WIndows NT was a portable O.S. open for anyone who wanted it.
