Technicolor Dreamcoat, strong imagery, good typography! It's not about bells and whistles -- clip art animated gifs of envelopes flying out of mailboxes are best left out. It's bigger than just a laundry list of individual likes and dislikes, though. Overall site design, how sites fit the needs of the intended audience, is discussed in this powerful article from Dave Siegel: dsiegel.com It's actually an old one (1995) but the web and site design are pretty much where he was predicting 3-4 years ago and longer.
