Kajiyama may contest LDP presidency--LDP MP quoted

TOKYO, July 16 (Reuters) - Former Japanese chief cabinet secretary Seiroku Kajiyama may announce his candidacy for LDP president, and thus the prime ministership, as early as Thursday afternoon, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) policy chief Taku Yamasaki quoted another LDP member of parliament as saying on Thursday.

Yamasaki told reporters that MP Takami Eto told a meeting of senior party members on Thursday that Kajiyama appeared to be planning to put his hat in the ring as early as ''this afternoon.''

Eto told the meeting that if Kajiyama ran for LDP president, he would support him, Yamasaki said.

A spokesman at Kajiyama's office said they had not heard anything about his plans to run for the party presidency.

Foreign Minister Keizo Obuchi, who is in the same party faction as Kajiyama, is believed to be ready to run, but a source close to Obuchi said on Thursday that he was still undecided when he would announce his intention.

Media reports said Obuchi had won the full support of his faction and was hoping to gather a broader, intra-faction support within the LDP before making his move.
