Kajiyama says will run for LDP presidency - Kyodo

TOKYO, July 16 (Reuters) - Former Chief Cabinet Secretary Seiroku Kajiyama told senior Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) members that he will run for the LDP presidency, which carries with it the prime ministership, Kyodo news service reported on Thursday.

Kajiyama conveyed his intention over telephone to a senior member of a faction led by former Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa, Kyodo quoted LDP sources as saying.

Earlier on Thursday, Foreign Minister Keizo Obuchi -- who heads of the largest faction in the LDP and who received the backing of his group on Wednesday to run for party president -- delayed until at least Friday a news conference to announce his candidacy.

The formal selection of the successor to Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto, who is resigning over his party's disastrous showing in elections for the Upper House of parliament last Sunday, will be decided by an LDP election next Tuesday.
