As to the question about whose interests the brokers looking out for.
When a broker gets up in the morning, he doesn't think about how much money he is going to make you. He thinks about how much in commissions he will generate that day.
Likewise, you don't think about how to make him money, just how to make yourself money.
If the bid was 2.43, the selling client should have gotten 2.43 in most cases.
