Thanks, MeDroogies-
It would not have occurred to me when I wrote the post TLC carped about that a reasonable person would have found it objectionable, nor does it in retrospect. Your post to TLC was, I suspect, beyond his capability to deal with a serious intellectual issue. He has a history on SI of making what I imagine he presumes are witty repartees, but in terms of an ability to deal with serious issues, well, you might as well as Madonna to re-write the Constitution of the United States.
I'd be curious about the specifics of the book you mentioned, "Undaunted Courage" (author, publisher, is it in print?) I'd at least like to look at it, and, if it significantly alters my view of Plains Indian culture, I'd be happy to post to that effect. At this point I'm still under the impression that custom, not law or diktat, regulated their social interactions and that therefore they were basically anarchic. I'm no expert on American Indian culture, however, and I'm not sure exactly how they handled pestiferous interlopers!

Larry
P.S. I think I'll be moving my brilliant stockmarket insight to www.ragingbull.com, where you have the ability to filter out posters you don't want to hear from! |
