HotMetal is #4 in WYSIWYG. According to IC's reasearch (Analyst Joan Carol Brigham's report in February) earlier this year, FrontPage's 1997 revenue was $44M, NetObjects Fusion at $12M, Adobe PageMill at $7M, and HotMetal at $4M. Macromedia is doing well with Dreamweaver which was introduced in December of 1997.

Macromedia dominates this market in terms of units. FrontPage comes with the NT server (half a million units a year). The FrontPage Express version comes with a variety of MS products.

SoftQuad changed HotMetal from a code tool to a WYSIWYG tools in 1997 and it didn't work out well. They lost the code-centric HTML developers but failed against the marketing power of Microsoft. Other WYSIWYG tools have failed in taking on FrontPage directly - PageMill, Symantec VisualPage. The success seems to be in aiming higher as NetObjects and Macromedia have done.

Maybe this is why HotMetal is up for sale.
