M'shita, others to draw up VCD standard for China Reuters Story - July 15, 1998 04:07
Jump to first matched term TOKYO, July 15 (Reuters) - Video compact disc product makers suffering from patent piracy in China will introduce a new VCD standard they hope will be adopted by Chinese firms, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd said on Wednesday. Matsushita said it and three other electronics producers had agreed with the Chinese government on the creation of the new VCD standard. Matsushita, Sony Corp , Victor Co and Philips Electronics NV of the Netherlands would cooperate to develop the new standard by August, a Matsushita spokesman said. The spokesman said Chinese firms had been making VCD products without paying licence fees to the four electronics firms, which held patents on the VCD technology. He said the four companies would ask Chinese makers to adopt the new standard, but declined to say how adoption would prevent such piracy of VCD technology.
