lrb:

I believe that the 50K figure appeared as an estimate in this thread long before it appeared in MOGN documents.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, David.

In the press release of 2/17/98, Blitzer et al. said.....

"As a primary condition, Sjogren's syndrome affects
approximately 200,000 people in the United States, most commonly women.
Sjogren's syndrome can also occur secondarily to other autoimmune
diseases, particularly rheumatoid arthritis, raising the number of
people in the United States who may suffer from some form of Sjogren's
syndrome to about 1 million."

MOGN may therefore be hoping that the total number of accessible patients will exceed 50K.

Annualized sales per patient were once estimated at $1K. I have no idea if this is the number that MOGN is currently using. If we use that figure and the 50K for patients, the quarter's $500K delta is about 4% of the targeted penetration.

If you buy the "there was no pharmacy stocking" argument, I guess that's OK.

>> They said in May that "the acceptance of using Salagen(R) Tablets as a
treatment for the symptoms of dry mouth in Sjogren's syndrome patients
has been excellent." Do you consider the $500K less than excellent? <<

"OK" is less that excellent, yes. I haven't seen any Claritin-like commercials on T.V., so I'd need to know more about the training and targeting of the sales force before commenting further.
