I do take your point, and I do agree that this market's, ahh, a bit overheated. But unless he had advance knowledge of the non-farm payrolls number (it's rumored that he did, but frankly I doubt it) he was taking the chance of provoking just the sort of nastiness he "saved the market" from in 1987.

Yes, he is supposed to direct (not, I think, control) U.S. fiscal policy, but I think one could legitimately debate whether his brief extends to making remarks that might well induce a selloff as "exuberant" as the runup that preceded it.

So--what should the role--and that of the Fed--be? Simply to fix monetary policy, or should it go beyond that? Uncle Alan opts for the latter, evidently, and he may be right, but I think what he did yesterday was an error of judgment.
