IMAT technology is much more than calcium screening. The calcium screening test has been getting a lot of press lately. Calcium screening was designed to give an indication or coronary artery diseases processes before functional damage occurred. The other tests are functional.

The Imatron scanner measures more than calcium. Since it sees the heart muscle in 3-d, it measures wall motion, ejection fraction, valve function, etc. This is done with an IV injection of contrast--no catheter into the heart. There is considerable software to compute these quantities.

A scanner-mounted exercise bicycle or a drug stress can be used if desired. One can also see if grafts or arteries are open, as was shown at the annual meeting.

It is especially good at classifying various birth defects of the heart and great vessels.
