Definition of the day:
Pump and Dump
This begins when an organization or individual influential over investors (for example, through newswire access) praises a stock as worthy of owning. The result can often be that the stock obtains an excessive market valuation. This bestowal of praise upon the stock frequently includes a discussion of Microsoft, Walmart, Sears and/or Berkshire Hathoway and how much shares of those companies would be worth today if one had bought into them early on and had held onto those shares.
The result can often be that stock price of the target company goes up, somtimes quite dramatically, on investor speculation. It is at this point the promoter of the stock sells. Later, when the company produces no improved earnings and reality comes to interfere with the dreams of many small investors, the stock price of the company returns to values marginally above what it was before the speculative interest began.
