Limtex,

IMHO...

I disagree. The design-ins are what SNDK is looking for in CompactFlash and they have been unbelievably successful. They have wanted others to compete for CF business, even CF cards. This has spurred alot of interest in the CF card market and keeps SNDK on their toes. The only thing they have not counted on is successful designs which circumvent their patent portfolio protection. The card assembly process is a particular area of concern. For this reason they have chosen Lexar as a primary target for patent infringement. Perhaps because they see them as a significant and highly visible competitor. They want to make an example out of them for others to see. Otherwise they would be forced to pursue a cadry of small package assemblers individually.

I think their legal defense record is solid. Look at the other giants who have bowed at the feet of SNDK. Even an ITC enforced trade embargo for a foreign competitor!

MMC may be the same story. Establish it as the de facto standard for removable memory in the handheld market (phones, PDA's, GPS,...) and then license out the technology.

I am not saying that SNDK doesn't wish to be competitive in the retail market. The new double density flash is just one innovation they are developing. They will continue to "push the envelope" and I hope that they are rewarded for that. A giant, reputable company like Kodak didn't chose SNDK's products on a whim!!!

I will repeat myself for the fourth or fifth time. I think we are gambling on the issue of patent protection in the near term.
