Just as Microsoft did a few months ago, Novell Inc. has begun recruiting in earnest Internet professionals who design, build and support web sites for customers. A new Alternative Channels Group headed up by Ed Bartos, who formerly ran the small network business unit, has already begun recruiting emerging partners within the ISP, ISV and other ranks often neglected by Novell and others. Separately, Novell has named a new channels manager, Nancy Reynolds, to take over for Phil Williams, who now reports directly to Novell president Joe Marengi. Looking ahead for 1997, Novell senior vice president of sales for North America Ron Heinz says Novell will work more closely with larger integration and reseller partners. Relationships with MicroAge, Entex, Vanstar and other organizations suffered somewhat, Heinz conceded, during 1996 when the company made a concerted effort to rekindle ties to smaller VARs and integration partners. While still the backbone of the Novell channel, Heinz says, Novell needs strong relations with the likes of MicroAge and other national service providers to compete effectively with Microsoft. Next week, the Provo, Utah, vendor will release details of new financing options for such companies. T.C. Doyle
