I would say you're right but not quite - his intention was to issue a wakeup call to trigger something of a correction and to get people to temper some of their unbounded enthusiasm. If he didn't ask those questions and thus get things up on the radar screen this could overheat and then the shorts (who would have added immensely to their positions in the interim) would have triggered a sell of that would feed on itself as panic set in. Better, Mr. G. reasoned, to cause a modest sell off but to get people to remember the Fed's awesome power to affect markets so as to cause some self-restraint - as I said, a wake up call. His first job is to protect the bondholders (the owners of our massive debt). Dee Jay
