Seems logical to me...sort've....
But, having 2 kids, I would be hard pressed to understand why we would allow a 7 year old to request adult status. They simply don't have the cognitive ability to understand then consequences of their actions. Let alone that making a decision of that type on their own, based on their immature understanding, is beyond their reasoning capability.
If you have kids, I would be amazed if you continued to believe that as reasonable.
The reason I think it seems logical is that if you set an age (14, say) and THEN the kid can go to court....that's acceptable. However, then you run into all kinds of other questions. Just because a kid is 14 DOESN'T mean that mentally he is 14. What about mentally handicapped people (I have 2 autistic nephews who will undoubtedly be on a severely handicapped plane their entire life), who think they can handle the rigors of adult life?
Too many questions. It is best to set a defining line...and let it work itself out from there. Clear definitions are fallible, but they work more efficiently - as long as they are consistent.
