I agree with Seagate's assertion that vertical integration is necessary to compete in the drive industry long term but as it specifically applies to the low cost drive for the sub 1000 I don't know what the specific trade offs are. They must have some arithmetic in mind that I am not familiar with. But I do think vertical integration is critical because the real point of fulcrum in this market is heads and media. With no control of that you are simply at the mercy of outside agencys IMO.
