This is why my opinion of CPQ has been less than glowing. CPQ has made a temporary mess out of their PC business. They are the largest producer of PC's and they had the most to lose. In 1997 they boasted that they created the Sub 1k market. In 1998 they felt the effects of the Sub 1k. They cut the profit out of their business. At the low end PC brand name means less, which is hurting CPQ even more.

But I do agree with you in the following respects. The Sub 1k was inevitable to fully expand the market, and it still has huge potential. The PC companies have to extricate themselves out of the price war. Tandem and DEC were probably good moves by CPQ and they will help CPQ move into the enterprise market. The services area is a recurring revenue stream and I can understand why CPQ needs to move into it.
