From today's (oft-derided) MacOSRumors:

At either Macworld SF or at its Winter product introduction, Apple will announce its consumer portable, which will bring the Mac OS into one of the areas of computing that has been sorely neglected -- consumer-priced portable computers with serious performance that run the same OS as desktops.

I think it's really going to be to Apple's advantage to have been out of this business for the last couple months. By almost all accounts, Apple's previous foray into the consumer portable sector was fraught with problems that may have been avoided had cooler heads prevailed.

But given the fact that iMac and Wall Street will be taking the brunt of sales during the next couple quarters, Apple can really focus on an area of the market in which I believe that can (and have) excel(ed). After all, the design factor in the consumer portable field has got to be one of the major considerations when purchases are made, and who better to pull off a compelling, kick-ass hardware/software package than Apple? I bet their designers are positively drooling over the challenges presented by putting together this product.

Thoughts? Seems like everyone's taken off for an early weekend. Adam, any idea how seamless the introduction of Apple's new consumer portable is likely to be in the midst of Palm's massive "installed base?" Doesn't the Palm already speak Mac? What are the other issues involved in getting potential consumers to choose the Apple over the Palm?

Stock seems to be holding up pretty well today; I'm impressed.
