Ah, las ruinas. If you ever get to Palenque, Chiapas, which I highly recommend doing, ask for Mo¡ses Morales - he owns a little lodge named El Panch n, the best place imho to stay at Palenque, a 10-peso cab ride, 3 peso en colectivo, from Palenque, and a 10-minute walk from las ruinas. Palenque was the religious capital of the Mayan empire for a while, and Mo¡s is the grand old man of the local guides and archeological groups, he has guided the heads of state of a variety of nations, including France and Japan. He speaks at least eight languages, including enough Japanese to get by, and trained in the US Air Force in '44/'45 at Brownsville, Texas, though he was born mejicano. Never got overseas, though, the war ended too soon. Ask him about la cantina de Raybel.
I owe him a large debt of gratitude, as he introduced me to my current and favourite wife, a mayita. He gets a mention here boss-inc.com |
