Ibexx & all, - "States drop Office claim in Microsoft suit" SEATTLE, July 17 (Reuters) - Attorneys general for 20 states and the District of Columbia filed an amended complaint Friday in their antitrust suit against Microsoft Corp., dropping charges related to the Office computer software package. A spokeswoman for New York Attorney General Dennis Vacco said the Office claims had been ''put on the back burner'' so officials could focus on preparing for a Sept. 8 trial date. ''We are continuing to look into the Office claims by issuing subpoenas next week,'' said the spokeswoman, Mollie Conkey, who declined to give details. ''It does not mean we do not think the Office suite charges are viable.'' She said the attorneys general also had bolstered their main charge that Microsoft had abused a monopoly position in the operating system market to try and squeeze out rival Netscape Communications Corp. (NSCP - news) from the Internet browser market. A Microsoft spokesman said the dropped charges were a ''very positive development'' for the company. ''The action by the states today combined with the recent appeals court ruling means that several major elements of the governments' case have been eliminated,'' spokesman Tom Pilla said.
