Rusty, from your post -- Dan Page, member of the CEO staff at Avant, noted
that supporting new platforms takes time away from
putting value into software. "What troubles me is how
many different flavors, environments and configurations
of Linux are out there," he said.

How many different flavors of Linux? I'm confused here. I've heard of Redhat and Caldera, how many more are there? I've been dealing with EDA vendors for a long time and they have a tendency to listen to the Dilbert managers. Of course many of those Dilbert managers are (unfortunately) signing PO's. Fortunately for me we have no Dilbert managers and people who "use" the tools are involved in purchasing decisions. I'll let my EDA vendors know I would like Linux, but I doubt they will listen.
