CHICAGO, July 17 (Reuters) - Lycos Inc. president and chief executive Robert Davis said Friday that a sense of community was an essential aspect of the Internet and his search engine company plans to encourage just that. "Community is clearly the buzz word for the next 12 months for us," Davis said at the Internet World trade conference here. While Lycos is one of the hot Internet "portal" companies, Davis said a more appropriate title for his company is "hub". "It's not only getting on and off the Web, it's a sense of community," Davis said. In fact, Lycos is planning several upcoming releases to encourage that sense of community. The new offerings will include special templates for making personal World Wide Web sites, for example, to announce a new baby and "a lot more" over the next year, he said. But while personal publishing is important, so is easing communication among Web users. Davis said Lycos' deal with AT&T Corp. , for example, will allow users to move automatically from a keyboard-based chat session into a telephone conversation. "It's encouraging users to be in touch with one another," Lycos said. Shares of Lycos were off 11/16 at 69-7/8 in early afternoon trade. |
