Pro-MPEG Forum.......................................

Switching topics now -- although the following is in fact very much related to Sony and Beta SX -- I would like to draw your attention to the establishment, at NAB, of the Pro-MPEG Forum. Companies involved in its establishment included Tektronix, BBC, Hewlett-Packard, Sony, Snell & Wilcox, IBM, Quantel, FAST, Pinnacle, Thomson Broadcast, ECI Telecom and Media 100.
The Forum is dedicated to 'realising the full potential offered by MPEG-2 as an open, international standard for compressed digital content. Widespread adoption and deployment of MPEG-2 into the professional environment demands interoperable, multi-vendor implementations of the standard -- not only across peer equipment, but across applications.'
Chairman Dr Nick Wells said, "The Pro-MPEG Forum will provide a forum for members to work together to ensure end-to-end interoperability. The Forum is open to manufacturers, end users and component suppliers." The first General Assembly of the Forum was held in early July, at which working groups were established to focus on specific topics including an interoperability demonstration targeted for NAB 99.
