According to the data from the LME web site prior to 1991 zinc stocks never went above 100,000 tonnes. And then within a couple of years increased more than ten-fold (over 1.2 million tons) before dropping to where they are today.

Why is this? Does it actually have a bearing on the price and is it possible that stocks could drop back to their pre-91 levels?

In other words - do we really know what a 'low inventory level' would be?
