Lucretius, there are a number of exit strategies that an investor can use to get out of the stock and/or market. A few are:

1) Sell a portion of one's holdings at given price points as the stock moves up.

2) Use stop loss orders...although this is not my favorite.

3) Sell a portions of one's holdings as the stock rolls over and starts to drop. Of course its difficult to get out if the stock "gaps down" or people panic and run for the doors.

4) Sell against the "box". Of course, this really only gives you more time to figure out what to do. Also, involves tax considerations.

But, not only is the market a gamble, life is also a gamble. But, I'm sure that you know this.

Why not play it safe and buy U.S. Bonds, or put the money in a CD?
