The latest edition (August 1998) of Wired just arrived and features a seven
page article on y2k. The wrapper boldly states: "Millennium Bugout: If you
knew what they knew, you'd be buying guns too". The article title banner
reads: "The Y2K Solution: Run for Your Life!!" The subheader reads:
"They were hand-picked to kill the Millennium Bug. They hunkered down and
started cranking out code. Now they're scared shitless...".

Written by Kevin Poulson, it does an excellent job of portraying the
growing anxiety among the geek y2k bug fixers as they awaken to some very
harsh possibilities. It focuses on a level headed nerdish programmer who is
in the process of fixing up a getaway in the Calif desert. He is the more
moderate of the two. The other, a systems analyst, is doing the all-out
survivalist gig. Neither are belittled or portrayed as eccentric given
their insights into the nature of the problem.

The article also chronicles the rise of comp.software.year-2000 and the
influence of various web sites in the raising of the y2k consciousness
(hysteria?).

A good article! Probably not at the newsstands yet, though. It may show up
at their web site <http://www.wired.com/wired/> but the current issue isn't
posted yet.

Even the media is getting into the act.
