USPS: 'QUESTION 7: How could the Year 2000 problem affect the Postal
Service?

ANSWER: The USPS has thousands of components ranging from
information systems to mail processing equipment, from forms to
elevators and security systems, that may not function properly when
the century date changes. Anything that manipulates or takes action
based on a date has the potential for failure or, possibly worse,
inaccurate operation. For the Postal Service, the Year 2000 problem
affects application programs, data, operating systems, computer
hardware, and a wide variety of equipment (e.g., mail processing
equipment, heating and air conditioning controllers, telephones, etc.).
