'Too often we hear small business owners say they do not expect to
be impacted by the Year 2000. They do not operate a mainframe
computer or a dedicated telecommunications network or large scale
data bases. To these individuals, I pose a series of questions. Do you
use any computers or software in your business? Do you keep
customer records in a database or track financial information on a
spreadsheet? Are your desktop computers connected to a server
using a local area network? Do you have turnkey systems? Have you
customized systems to fit your operations? Do you conduct any part
of your business using electronic commerce, electronic funds transfer,
or electronic data interchange? Do you accept credit card payments
or use point of sale equipment? Do you use a service bureau for
payroll processing or other applications? Do you depend on a data
bank for legal, medical or other information? Do you have automated
equipment for communicating with a sales or service force in the
field? Does your plant or factory utilize industrial automation? Do you
use diagnostic or laboratory equipment? Are your production
operations integrated with your back office operations? Are you
required by law to monitor environmental emissions? Do you own a
telephone switching system? Do you have a security system? Do
your operations reside in an "intelligent" building? Do you have
critical suppliers or customers? Do you use trains, airplanes or long
haul trucks for product distribution or resupply of inventory? Do you
rely on government services? Does your business depend on ready
access to petrochemicals, telecommunications, water and
wastewater treatment, or electricity?
