Reagent Industry Ramblings

Technetx,

I recently had the pleasure of meeting an individual who appeared to be rather knowledgeable regarding the automation of blood analysis and reagents. He agreed that that there is a serious push to automate the process and bring instrumentation to market.

One company mentioned during our conversation was Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, a Johnson & Johnson company which sells millions of dollars worth of reagents. Evidently they control a very large percentage of the reagent market. Additionally, I learned that they have developed partially automated system capable of analyzing blood samples. He asked if the ABS2000 was an open system that could utilize other reagents from competitors. I told him that I did not believe so as the analysis and results are based on Immucor's proprietary reagents. He was also interested in Immucor's industry reputation regarding the reagent's sensitivity and reliability. Believe it or not, I do not know.

It will be very interesting to see Immucor's razor & blades strategy play out. If there is a significant increase in reagent sales anything can happen.

Regards,

Tom
