<Why does LU and Cpq continue to trade after the bell?>

I'm surprised no one has responded to your question by this time. There are two simple answers.

1) With companies of this size, it would be entirely normal that some traders will have a feel on the next day's price direction and, thus, decide to grab a head start on the rest of us. If they guess right, it can be very profitable for them. So there's no surprise when they trade after hours even in the absence of breaking news.

2) The Pacific Stock Exchange (PSE) is open for at least a couple of hours after the NYSE closes and they trade many NYSE stocks. So any activity on the PSE after 4:00 p.m. EST is technically an after-hours trade.
